Overview of the project

Designer Inspiration

The design of the armor created in collaboration with Rohan Mirza draws from a rich blend of visual and cultural influences. One recurring element across the collection is the distinctive nose band, inspired by Reita, a J-pop artist known for always concealing his nose with a strip of fabric. This subtle yet striking detail shifts the entire expression of the face, offering an alternative to the more common practice of hiding the eyes or mouth. The armor also features 3D printed synthetic hair, another nod to Reita’s signature look with long strands falling over his face, reinforcing the theme of hidden identity. The surface patterns of the armor were derived from tattoo designs by Louise, known online as Bravo Chouchou, whose work merges the softness of cute, cartoon-inspired imagery with darker, sometimes raw undertones. This tension between innocence and edge became central to the armor’s aesthetic. Finally, the project reflects a broader fascination with the presence of armor in visual culture, from mainstream icons like Iron Man to cult universes like Metal Gear Solid, reimagining this symbolic object in a tangible, hyper-real form through 3D printing.

Concept Presentation:

The concept behind this 3D-printed armor by Rohan Mirza draws on a universal cultural symbol, the armor seen across films, animation, and video games, from mainstream icons like Iron Man to niche universes such as Metal Gear Solid. After experimenting with several armor-inspired looks in previous projects, this new piece was designed to appear far more realistic and tangible.

One of the main challenges with traditional desktop 3D printing techniques is the “plastic” finish often associated with prototyping: visible layering, a glossy surface, and an overall synthetic feel. While that aesthetic can be fitting for certain creative projects, such as accessories or toy-like props, this time, the intention was different. Rohan aimed for a mineral, almost earthen texture, something that felt as if the armor had emerged from the ground itself. The MJF technology offered by Sculpteo provided exactly that: a dense, stone-like surface impossible to replicate with in-house methods.

Material focus

The ambition was to create a 3D-printed piece that feels both hyper-realistic and luxurious, like haute couture crafted from an exceptional fabric. In previous designs, materials such as TPU were used as a base for molding leather, combining flexibility with 3D structure. Here, however, the approach was reversed, the 3D print itself was designed to mimic the tactile quality of leather, bringing depth and authenticity directly through the printed material.

Another defining element of the project is the lacing system connecting each section of the armor. This structural feature allows the piece to adapt perfectly to individual body shapes, transforming what is traditionally a rigid, restrictive object into something flexible and body-responsive. For Rohan, this inversion, an armor that protects while embracing the body’s form, captures the essence of what makes this 3D-printed creation so innovative.

Beyond the Print

As Rohan Mirza explains, the key goal for this year’s project was to achieve a clear step-up in quality for his 3D prints. From his perspective, the only way to reach that level of refinement was through MJF printing technology, known for producing parts with an exceptionally noble and professional finish. Unlike conventional desktop 3D printing, where visible layers and surface irregularities often reveal the process, MJF creates objects so detailed and consistent that it becomes difficult to tell they were 3D printed at all.

When visitors recently came by Rohan’s studio, many were surprised to learn that the armor had been 3D printed, a reaction that, for him, was proof of success. Even with his trained eye, accustomed to spotting the typical markers of additive manufacturing, the difference was striking. The material’s weight, flexibility, and tactile quality all contributed to a level of realism and craftsmanship rarely seen in standard prints.

Collaborating with Sculpteo was therefore a deliberate choice. Beyond access to advanced MJF printers, it meant benefiting from a specialized expertise in high-end materials and industrial production processes that are typically out of reach for smaller studios.
